Every musician should have “Music Notation” by Gardner Read. It’s not really a theory book. This is the book Frank Zappa used, and turned Steve Vai on to it. Trust me, you must have this book as a reference.
For jazz, I have great respect for Ted Greene, and own his books, but I do not suggest them, especially for basics. I much prefer Scott Nunes’ books.
Also, get Barry Galbraith’s books & playalong CDs. They show you how chords move on blues & standards.
