I appreciate the new quizzes because I’m finding them impossible to ace! They are designed to be instructional rather than pet my ego and boost my GPA. One part of me loves this. The other part of me gets a little annoyed. It’s a good exercise and I sincerely appreciate the way this was designed around the fact that guitar technique is inherently and endlessly tricky… until we all become great masters.

I haven’t seen these new quizzes. I’ll have to check them out. Are they in the Primer?

Yes. As I understand it there is just one free quiz during the launch and that’s the string hopping quiz. There are three other quizzes on other pickslanting primer subjects available to subscribers and owners of the pickslanting primer. I found these on my dashboard under quick actions next to the motion tests and TC quick links.

While the quiz questions are not trick questions I would categorize them as tricky because some of the motions are subtle. Not complaining. I love the challenge. I think I understand this material very well but I’m scoring average about 80% on these quizzes so far.

I did the Motion Mechanics test, and got 23 of 25 correct. But I take pretty strong issue with the two that are “wrong”. lol

> It should be exactly how it is presented in the quiz: A side by side “fast version” and a slow version right next to it so you can see both movements isolated and study them on repeat.

Have you tried the “clips” in the interviews? Because you can do almost exactly that.

For what it’s worth, I started this thread because I saw the value in these quizzes and noticed nobody was talking about them in the forums yet. Having now completed all four quizzes, I hope all subscribers will integrate these quizzes into their learning process after watching the primer and spending some time with some of the interviews.

My average score turned out to be pretty good at 86.5%. I’ll want to brush up on motion mechanics and string hopping. It’s good to know that I could improve my knowledge and comprehension in those areas. They correlate directly to things I’m trying to smooth out in my own actual playing technique.

Thanks again.

> Yes, this is (possibly) a name I created. But it’s defensible. “Gilbert Sixes” communicates a very specific thing and your version of “3NPS, six-note grouping” is not nearly enough. The six-note unit only ascends or only descends, it starts over on the same string where it terminates, it’s explicitly single-escape, etc. If I had to explain that every time I need someone to play it, I’d go crazy. The name is warranted here because it is economical, and we are going to keep using it in our lessons.

How about an additional test for defining these commonly-used-around-here terms? Could even involve video: which example shows Gilbert Sixes, etc.

Thanks for posting this. Your interpretation of the intent behind the quizzes is exactly right: they’re supposed to be difficult enough to teach, rather than simply confirm what you already know. I like taking tests for probably the same reason people like doing crosswords—the struggle is part of the appeal—but there’s a practical purpose here too. Filming your technique is only useful if you know what to look for, and these questions are designed to train that skill one distinction at a time. “Tricky but not trick questions” is a very good description of what we were aiming for.

That sounds like a vocabulary test. I’m less excited about that. But to the extent that “Gilbert Sixes” is a concept, that absolutely matters.

We have a batch of very nice new material coming up that streamlines the sequence in the Primer, and gives lesson-title-level visibility to as many of the most important concepts as possible.

As part of this, the idea of a single escape lick is important and Gilbert Sixes is one of the simplest examples of it you can point to. That would be a good spot for the phrase to be formally introduced, so you’re not just relying on ambience and thinking “where have I heard that before?” I think that’s the best way to address smaller vocabulary-style questions.
