Adramelch - Irae Melanox
One of the first Prog Metal albums, really good. Unfortunately the production is not the best, but the rest more than makes up for it.

I’m a sucker for deep cut thrash albums especially of the more technical variety
Russia’s Аспид (Aspid) only put out one album Кровоизлияние (Extravasation) in 1993 but what an album.
I will always use any excuse to talk about Coroner
Any of their albums could go here but Mental Vortex from 1991 is my favorite.
A criminally underrated band
Speaking of earlier prog metal.
I guess 1988 could be considered the best year in prog metal history.
(Also being the year Metallica and Iron Maiden went prog)
Queensryche’s Operation: Mindcrime
Fate’s Warning’s No Exit
and Crimson Glory’s Transcendence.
Midnight was probably at this point the most talented singer in metal.
But my favorite underrated prog metal album goes to Shadow Gallery’s Tyranny.
@aliendough My plan is to keep updating as folks share their favorites. Too much good music out there that I do not know about, and I can’t be alone in this attitude.
Candiria’s 300% Density is still a go-to for me on a regular basis, with Process Of Self-Development as a close 2nd. These are the first and last “actual” tracks from 300% but it’s amazing from front to back for me. When I toured with them, we didn’t get to play either of these and it still kind of irks me, lol
That said, Slugdge is a band I only recently heard about and it’s pretty great. I’m picking their The Cosmic Cornucopia album because it’s like 150 minutes long and incredibly dense, so I think from an engagement POV, this will take a while to fully absorb.
Very curious for your review, Eric!
On my end, I honestly don’t know how under the radar a pick this is, since he’s probably someone I’d expect most of you to know by name, but I don’t know how well his catalogue is really known, especially in “shred” circles, which he most definitely is not.
But, if I had to pick one album to listen to for the rest of my life, stranded on a desert island… It’d probably be Tom Waits’ Mule Variations. Here’s a badass fan-made video of the album closer:
Love that song, and the whole album is… well, out there, but also incredible.
It gets a little samey, but it’s good vibes and good playing. I think I’d say “samey” for anything that tightly-focused on one sound, though, to be honest. It’s not really a drawback.
