Gabrielthorn progress thread

I’ve always found the 5 string triad shapes difficult. The stretch on the lowest string and also some of the finger rolling needed for them is challenging

Having a quick go (albeit unplugged) at the 1st couple of arps, I’m considering the pinky note on the 5th string semi- expendable…

And more of a jump/shift more than a straight stretch…

Behold - my janky arpeggio hahaha!

Very hard to keep the fretting hand relaxed. I have small hands so its a bit of a stretch!

Edit: with a bit of work, I might get it to pop a bit…

Goddam dude you are too good ! Seriously amazing playing again.
I’ve been going back and forth trying and struggling to play this even at half speed consistently since you brought it up back in July.

I do think it’s more of a left hand problem for me though and I have a feeling I’m trying to play an additional 3 notes compared to your version and the rundown on the top E string is for sure different and the hardest left hand part in my version, so when I go back to it next time I will reassess my transcription.

A quick aside but are you guys using 9s and low action to help with left hand dexterity? I was thinking I am using hybrids ATM but was thinking I should go to 8s to make things easier on my left hand eventually.

@SlyVai 9s on an LP scale (24.75 inch) tuned in standard here

Cool, of course the scale and tuning matters too and I always seems to tune down half a step on my V or LP, so maybe 8s would be too loose on those and 9s will suffice.

The left hand part is killing me too. I’m thinking about altering the second ascending run as I feel my fingers are crammed if I stick to the 12th position and I keep missing the 15th fret with my pinky which is the most important note there.

Also, I’m thinking about starting the run slightly ahead of the first beat of the measure, as I can clearly hear it’s not a straight run of 32nd notes, it’s more like triplets in the beginning, it has a different flow to it. It would also make it easier to nail it once out of a 100 times in a live situation.

Well, it already sounds much better and more fluid then my attempts, my left hand simply breaks when I try repeating this.

Is this one of those times where you say you can’t play it and subsequently post a vid of you playing it 99% there? jokes aside, what I find with this is that it is that the ‘stretch’ is much easier to do ascending up the arpeggio, so starting on the 5th string helps. I think that when I started descending, my fretting position and posture isn’t optimised for the stretch and by that time its too late.

All of the notes aren’t in complete sync yet (I think that the poor audio of my video makes it sound better than it did in the room tbh), but I’m straight up concentrating on getting that reduced tension feel and trying to optimise the fretting posture as I feel slight soreness after 5 mins of practice.

Like all techniques in guitar, I have never been able to dominate sweeping at all, but its fun to try…

No, I really suck at this. I’ll make some recording in the evening or tomorrow. I find the descending part easier

Definitely try starting with the ascending version and see if that helps iron it out any fretting issues. The arpeggios feel very different to me depending on whether I start from the top or the bottom, but if successfully started, looping is more viable… I don’t know if that is common?

To me it feels like I need to either position the fretting hand in a way that will cope with both descending and ascending or adapt the fretting hand halfway to complete the arpeggio, if that makes any sense?

It would be great to see some sweeping/fretting demons here in the forum dive in here… where did I put Gambale’s phone number???

I try make sure I don’t need to adjust my thumb to ascend and descend. If I have to adjust the thumb, it falls apart at speed. That’s just me though.

Wondering where this guy gets his stamina from. I’ll call it a day if I could sustain scales at this speed for this long.

Also an interesting story that Yngwie (or his management(or his wife)) forced him to delete all his Yngwie covers. What a world we are living in…

Today’s sloppy take, slightly faster. One day I’ll get there… Or not

I think you were right about it having just one picked note on the B string. It sounds to me like those notes are on the beat.

Two random takes, one after the other. I have no faith in playing this at 200 bpm, ever.

I think it is sounding great!

Sounds great - is it stamina the issue here? I would be interested to hear each main section at 200bpm - I know its easier said than done, but I reckon you could do it.
