History of the piece.

[Composer: Grigoraș Ionică Dinicu (Violin & Composer)](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grigora%C8%99_Dinicu)

> **Grigoraș Ionică Dinicu** (Romanian: [[ɡriɡoˈraʃ joˈnikə diˈniku]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Help:IPA/Romanian); April 3, 1889 – March 28, 1949) was a [Romanian](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Romania) [violin](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Violin) virtuoso and [composer](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Composer) of [Roma](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Romani_people) ethnicity. He is most famous for his often-played virtuoso [violin](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Violin) showpiece “[Hora staccato](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hora_staccato)” (1906) and for making popular the tune [Ciocârlia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cioc%C3%A2rlia_(folk_tune)), composed by his grandfather Angheluș Dinicu[[1]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grigora%C8%99_Dinicu#cite_note-1)[[2]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grigora%C8%99_Dinicu#cite_note-2) for “nai” (the Romanian [pan flute](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pan_flute)). It is rumored that [Jascha Heifetz](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jascha_Heifetz) once said that Grigoraș Dinicu was the greatest violinist he had ever heard. In the 1930s he was involved in the political movement of the [Romanian Roma](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roma_in_Romania) and was made honorary president of the “General Union of the Romanian Roma”.[[3]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grigora%C8%99_Dinicu#cite_note-3) **Other well known compositions are: _Hora mărțișorului_ (_Mărțișor_, literally “little March”, is a major Romanian seasonal holiday on March 1),** _Ceasornicul_ (_The Clock_) and _Căruța poștei_ (_The Post Wagon_).
