How much time do you need to get back up to speed?

I actually currently think that this is the real utility of metronome work. If you can already play in time (which most probably can), forcing yourself to play something at a range of speeds is super useful.

I find it most useful if I’m just picking up guitar again after a long break (like I have recently), to get my single-string picking in shape again. It’s a lesson I have to relearn every time.

Damn right! Hitting tons of different speeds with the same lick/riff/etc will allow you to pinpoint weaknesses in your playing and address them accordingly.

I saw this video yesterday and thought it was an interesting (and potentially more fun and musical) way to practice picking or other exercises, both the point about using drum loops and how he works on different subdivisions of the beat.
