I wanted to share this helpful IG reel from Josh Middleton explaining his picking technique for fast metal rhythm playing. He mentions supinating his arm and flexing his wrist, is he essentially explaining RDT motion without directly referencing it? Pick escape looks neutral or slightly DSX. I would like to know everyone’s thoughts on this, thanks!

Non expert here: yeah he’s describing what RDT feels like to me, at least. Snapping a towel, throwing a frisbee, wringing water off your hands, etc

Props to Josh for highlighting how limiting the literal side to side motion can be. If your motion looks or feels side to side-ish but you experience no issues with the range if said motion, I bet it’s most likely a shallow variant of DT/RDT.

Agreed with these sensations, and I bring it up only because none of these things are solely wrist motions - they all involve momentum generated by forearm rotation. RDT sorta needs that forearm involvement to work at its full potential, even if it’s minor, or nearly invisible.

Similarly, motions closer to deviation can work fast… when they get an elbow boost.
