Try raising the action. The reason strat players played 008s and 009s back in the days was the neck radius, which forced you to choose between bending strings or low action - you couldn’t have both. Light strings need some distance to the frets imo. I mostly replace the top string for “one heavier”, like a set of 10s with 11 on top. It’s more balanced electrically, especially with a clean sound.
You’re talking about the 7.25" radius Strats, right?
Good point on the original Fender radius issue, Staffan. I have found that I can use lighter strings for easy bending and I have a much easier time with legato techniques, too! I set mine up to have extreme bending coming out clean and the legato being as clean as well.
There is a certain sweet spot where these things come together. Also try setting your action while playing standing up. That’s a really good trick to use when looking for that sweet spot.
