Mixed Notes-Per-String Permutations

I think both approaches can have their benefits / can generate interesting musical ideas. Have you ever seen the book “Speed Picking for Guitar” (or similar title) by Frank Gambale? He comes up with very cool patterns inside the canonical CAGED & pentatonic shapes, just by trying to apply his sweeping rules.

Absolutely, I’ve definitely done things in this direction too. I’d only caution against the idea some people have of needing to practice something else before they start practicing the thing they’re interested in.

If you want to play Jazz lines built from CAGED shapes, don’t put that off until after you’ve developed you picking. Do them concurrently, and let each process inform the other.

I have that book, I got it as a teenager. Frank might be the most explicit example ever of a player knowingly optimizing their lines around their mechanics.
