I don’t know…it is not comming back any soon if ever.
The biggest problem is money.
There are no record companies anymore who would search for new acts, contract them and give them money to produce a nice album, and then promote the whole thing and get it on stage etc…
That s all gone and won’t come back…

The biggest problem is money - that we agree on. It wasn’t difficult to look at the advent of the internet, kids downloading music illegally for free, and make the connection to all the record stores one by one going bankrupt. I thought at least the mighty Tower Records would survive it but even they too fell. The record stores going under started right around the time of the internet becoming mainstream and illegal downloading becoming prevalent. The correlation is right there. So of course the record labels went under because it meant people weren’t buying CDs in great enough quantities anymore to keep the record stores financially solvent. The whole thing was technology driven. If there were no internet, none of those other things would have happened. They were casualties of the internet.

I challenge anyone to name an industry which could stay in business if their products were available for free to anyone who wanted them.

As for the rock music industry being all gone and not coming back, I have a different view of it than you. You may very well be right; but I have a more optimistic outlook. One thing history has shown is people have never been very good at predicting what the future would hold. I’m sure that in The Great Depression of the 1930s, plenty of people thought our economy was ruined to the point that we would never enjoy as good a standard of living as we had had in the 1920s. Those people were wrong. Things happened which they never could have foreseen.

What we need to happen is for some technology to arise which would either make it possible to stop illegal downloading of the current product (having law enforcement do its job instead of turning a blind eye to it would also be helpful) or to release music on a new format which would be very difficult or impossible to illegally upload or download.

Barring that, then the only other option which comes to mind would be something similar to YouTube except that it wouldn’t be free. All professional musicians would pull their music from YouTube and showcase it on this new site. There would be videos, like MTV had, there would be promotion, and there would be some barriers to entry unlike YouTube which allows even the worst of the worst bands to upload their videos alongside videos of new bands that are actually talented. This is what makes it so hard for people to find good new bands on YouTube. The problem is you have to sift through so much garbage to find something of quality.

With the record label system, that problem was (mostly) taken care of because there were barriers to entry. Only bands that had a future were signed. They were given money for artist development. That allowed bands like Pink Floyd, which released 6 albums which flopped until their 7th album ā€œDark Side Of The Moonā€ became a phenomenon. Pink Floyd’s label had faith in them and kept supporting them through those first 6 albums. That would never happen today. If your first, or at least second album isn’t successful, you’re done!

Hopefully a paid for site for music would operate much like the major record label system did. Their income would allow them to pay for artist development, for marketing and publicity for bands, and to fianne their tours so that bands could do major tours and then pay the record labels back afterwards out of the proceeds from their tours. After all, how many bands today have half a million dollars of their own money from which to market, publicize, and conduct a tour? You could have the greatest new band in the world playing 5 miles away from you tonight, but if nobody knows about it, nobody will show up!

There is an audience for rock music. Metallica and Guns n Roses both filled stadiums on recent tours. It’s just been impossible to properly market and publicize new bands. Shred was never truly mainstream music and even today, you see kids interested in learning to play 80s style shred guitar. If something as far from mainstream as that has so many kids learning to play it, that’s a good sign. As for understanding why rock 'n roll will always have a potential audience, it goes like this: As long as there is teenage rebellion, there will be rock 'n roll!

For sure hope you are right with your optimistic view, i am less optimistic.
With the internet people will always find a way to illegal download or share i am afraid…

I just re-read the above post and now I’m wondering did you mean Eddie needs to find someone who can sing because DLR can’t sing well now, or do you mean DLR could never sing well?

I don’t know how he sounds now so I have no opinion regarding the current state of his vocals. I’ll say this: Roth may not have ever had what people might call a ā€œconventionally good voiceā€ but he had a good voice for the songs he had to sing. I don’t think anyone else would have sounded any better singing Running With The Devil than David lee Roth did. I love the way he sounds on his personality driven (as opposed to musically driven) approach on lines like ā€œHave you seen Junior’s grades?ā€ Diamond Dave had so much personality and charisma that he complimented EVH’s technical mastery perfectly! You had the virtuoso and the ultimate frontman. What a great combination! Van Hagar has technically better vocals than Van Halen, but I’m not a Van Hagar fan. ā€œPoundcakeā€ is a cool song and a few others are good, but nothing that touches ā€œPanamaā€ or ā€œHot For Teacher.ā€

It’s the attitude, the swagger, that David Lee Roth brought to Van Halen and to get back to the thread subject, Anton needs to work on having some swagger of his own. Maybe he will never have a ton of it, but then he can hire a frontman who does! As great as Eddie Van halen was when he made his debut in 1978, he would have looked ridiculous with a haircut like Oparin’s haircut. This kid has all the chops to possibly be the 2019 version of 1978’s Eddie Van Halen (both 23 years old) but he needs to do something about that hair and those clothes and developing a little bit of swagger. I’m saying that in the same way I believe any good manager would say it - not as criticism or as an insult but because it needs to be said! If his manager isn’t telling him that then his manager isn’t doing him any favors by not saying that.

Image matters in rock music. Attitude matters. Of course the music is the main thing but those other things are still important contributing factors. Chicks love it too, so I’m sure he won’t mind it if he starts getting more popular with the ladies than he ever imagined he could be. It’s not why we get into guitar playing in the first place but it sure is a nice added perk

Edit: It just occurred to me that when I say ā€œit’s not why we get into guitar playing in the first placeā€, well maybe I shouldn’t try to speak for everyone. It’s not why I got into guitar playing. I started learning how to play guitar after a friend of mine turned me on to AC/DC’s Back In Black album and Ozzy’s Blizzard Of Ozz and Diary Of A Madman albums. I had never heard anything like it!!! First he played AC/DC and when it was over he said ā€œNow I have something even heavier for you to hear.ā€ My response is absolutely classic in its naivety. It shows just how little I knew of heavy rock. I asked ā€œHow can it be any heavier than that (Back In Black)? The guy is already screaming as loud as he canā€!!!

Isn’t that classic? So, my friend replied, and this would be prophetic as far as my destiny: ā€œThe guitar can be heavierā€!

Very strange to me how you talk about the getting famous thing and what Anton should do with hus haircut and getting a frontman with attitude, bla…bla.
Anton does not need that and most probably does not want that at all.
If he would think and act in that direction he would never have been that good. He is determined to play guitar at the highest possible level, that is what matters to him!
Change his haircut…Feels like a joke to me.

Take for instance someone like Allan Holdsworth.
He was very determined to what he wanted to achieve and never ever was concerned about his haircut or getting a frontman with attitude etc…
He died as a poor man in terms of having no money but very rich in terms of showing and amaze the guitarworld what can be done on the el guitar and composed some beautifull music.
That to me is the equivalant of a true artist and innovator, not those who would do anything just to get famous.

The guitarworld knows, and those who don’t will soon know, about Anton, and he will continue to amaze because he will continue to practice and push the boundries, because he is not concered about his haircut, getting woman or become very rich.

like I said, Im a HUGE DLR fan. Since I started studying singing myself about 3 years ago I have deeper appreciation for him. Probably one of the most underrated singers ever. You NEVER see him on any ā€œtop 10ā€ singers list but he should be IMO.

Now, all that being said. Im a huge fan of DLR STUDIO stuff. Even in his prime he never really sang live lol. He’d sing and few syllables and talk some jive etc. I cant stand to hear VH live stuff.

And now?? sorry to say but DLR cant sing a lick now. Never seen anyone lose their voice that bad with maybe Vince Neil as the exception lol

This sort of feels like when parents argue about their child, in front of their child.

A social worker should remove anton and Eddy immediately

Oh, has he? That’s too bad. He was such a cool frontman - definitely one of the best in the business. Those screams in Running With The Devil were vicious! I guess he probably can’t do those anymore.

I never went to see Motley Crue in concert but I heard one of their concerts broadcast on the radio one night on a weekly radio show that would broadcast a different concert every week. It wasn’t hard rock and heavy metal every week, it was a big variety of rock bands. There was one program like that called The King Biscuit…something - I don’t remember the exact name. There might have been one more show as well besides that. Anyway, they had Crue and it was fairly early in their careers so Vince definitely hadn’t blown out his voice yet. It may have been from the tour for Shout At The Devil. Sad to say, but Vince could not sing. Or if he could he was too wasted on who knows what to be able to sing that night. It was actually embarrassing. So, even though his voice in the studio was pretty good, I don’t know for sure that he ever sang well live. I would think that at least in their days in the clubs he must have been able to sing well at their live shows but maybe when they started having to tour nationally and worldwide that singing night after night put a strain on his voice that he didn’t know how to handle. Add their lifestyle to the mix, and I’m not surprised to hear he has lost his voice.

Oh, I forgot, there is some good news regarding Crue. Apparently their long awaited movie based on ā€œThe Dirtā€ is actually a done deal. It took forever. Part of that was because MTV was originally going to produce it but then they reneged on the deal. So Netflix is producing it and it will be coming to theaters in March of 2019. If it’s even half as good as the book, it’s gonna be killer! I’m especially looking forward to seeing the wild stuff they did in their nightclub days like when they used to set Nikki Sixx on fire onstage.

HIlarious, and on point. We’ve spoken about this before, but when it comes to amazing players we might work with, I’d really hate for them to stroll on over to our site, search for their name, and then find Cracking the Code regulars ripping on their hair cut. So please, @Acecrusher, try to think about whether these comments are helping or hurting the mission. In this case, this is not helping.

More generally, if a thread veers off into comments on people’s appearance, or into ā€œthey don’t make music like they used toā€ territory, there’s also a good chance that it’s off-topic for the thread. I think that’s a good rule of thumb, because so far, that’s what I’ve seen. It’s definitely the case here.

If you want to have discussions about the good old days, I have no problem with that, but I’d make a thread specifically for that.

Man, they sure don’t make guitar forums like they used to…

I kid, I kid.

Actually, it felt a lot like Harmony Central Guitar Jam circa 2006-7 until Troy stepped in.

You’re totally right!

Anyway, back on topic… If there’s anything left to discuss, lol.

His picking at the age of 8 is faster than mine will ever be. I’m slightly curious about his teachings, but I doubt he remembers the methods he used at the age between 5-8 or so that made him that fast. But again, a good example of a player that developed the skill base at very early stages.

From what i know his father, who was a prof trainer in boxing, karate etc…even trained Russian elite troops. He taught him the basic mechanics and how the muscles work on a very deep level.
Also from what i remeber reading he started on the violin and could already play that well at very young age.

He has a platform now on the internet where he teaches through his method. I am thinking of subscribing.

Only now FREE tips for everyone!!! If you want one free advice to your playing, don’t hesitate and send me a message. I’ll do the best I can!!

If you want to play anything that your mind can imagine!! Build a system of practice, know the technology of training muscles, speed and accuracy. Develop incredible alternate picking technique, quality, professional sound, become more musical in every melisma that you make, become great in improvisation and playing in any style of music ever existed.

No problem with discussing other instructional resources on the forum, but please don’t post direct contact information - that turns the thread into a banner ad, which is less about discussion and more about redirecting traffic somewhere else. You can either edit the post or I can do so - just let me know.
