It feels against what my fingers are inclined to do which is ironic because my more comfortable speed picking position involves, like I said in the original post, anchoring at the fat part of the hand below the thumb rather than anchoring at the base of the pinky, which creates a motion that looks like it clears the strings on downstrokes while also having a downwards pickslant at the same time. I’m still a bit confused because in the video I posted I’m aiming for slight supination in the forearm and anchoring at the base of the pinky to create an up-pick escape for string changes, but it just doesn’t happen comfortably. And yet, the DSX-ified version of the lick feels more challenging. Wtf 🥲

Since I don’t think anyone addressed this, yes - the 6 note per string/repeated 3 note motif thing is basically a way to reverse your starting pickstroke - you play the first note with an upstroke, and the last with a downstroke. If you play with escaped downstrokes, this allows you an effortless string change… but if you were an escaped upstroke player, then you could playthis same run startng on an upstroke, so your first string was U-D-U, allowing you to escape, and your second was D-U-D, U-D-U, allowing you to escape.

for me starting with upstrokes often feels unnatural, so you could do an alternate version of this by repeating the pattern on the first string, so every string has six notes and your pattern is D-U-D-U-D-U which is one that works fluidly for an escaped upstroke since you start every string with a downstroke and end it on an upstroke. Arguably it’s the escaped upstroke variant that’s a “modification” of this kind of even-number-of note patter where if you start with your buried stroke you end on your escaped, as a way to start on a downstroke but then still change strings on every downstroke.

@WhammyStarScream - whatever you were wrong about, deleting all of your posts about it means anyone reading can’t also learn from your thinking here, and how you got to the right conclusion - it’s a way more helpful discussion when you leave them up there and don’t go back and delete everything! :slight_smile:

I saw the run incorrectly.
Kind of like when you can’t make out a lyric but the subtitles fill it in for you, even if they are wrong.

Yeah but @Drew point is that even if you feel you might have been wrong, this isn’t necessarily a binary discussion. Even if you “got” the run incorrectly, it doesn’t mean that what ever you said has zero value.

Keep in mind that I am nobody, but it looks like your pick-strokes are kind of rolling under the strings after both pick-strokes; Trapped is what that is, and it’s a big pain in the butt. I experience that because for some unknown reason I seem to apply pressure into the guitar body with my right hand. For me I think it was some sort of cross-wiring that I equated that pressure with going faster, or hitting harder for intensity.

Took a bit of effort to ditch that, and the accompanying background tension, but once I did - picking was much less fraught with error. (Garage spikes) :grinning:

Your book is amazing. I’ve been applying what you teach and I’ve made huge guitar gains. Yesterday I threw on a documentary and did your cheers method for 20 minutes for a short sextuplets sequence and holy shit… that’s all I have to say.

Well, I was picking up speed on a couple things that I’ve been practicing and I was seeing some improvement but I realized that my playing is extremely inconsistent and I rarely run through a successful repetition of something fast like sextuplets at, say 120bpm, so I’ve been reevaluating some things. I think my primary picking technique is starting to change because I can now quite easily pick with the evh wrist wiggle type motion at high speeds whereas before I struggled to even get that motion happening. I think this has happened as a result of me trying to get upstrokes to escape the strings, because before I defaulted to a more pronated looking position that inconsistently, and kinda uncomfortably could escape on a downstroke or an upstroke. It resembled the dart thrower technique. Damn I’ve been playing for 3 years and all of a sudden I’m starting to feel like I’m regressing rather than improving
