Thanks for posting that, The old version on youtube had this crazy flashing.
But this one also seems weird in a way, its either sped up or missing frames?
Perhaps the flashing frames have been removed?
The higher quality versions have frame interpolation to bring the framerate up to 60 FPS. I assume this was done by AI.
The weird flashing frames and the audio noise on the lower quality versions has given me more than a couple of headaches over the years.
I don’t know if the upscaled versions used the old rips that were available as the sources.
To me it looks like frames have been removed, like old black n white low fps videos.
So the movement seems fast but is just missing frames?
I"m not sure how you would remove the flashing otherwise.
I don’t really know, video processing isn’t a subject I’m knowledgeable on.
If the flashing was an artifact of the encoding from the old VHS rips and the upscaled versions were based on those rips, you could well be right.
If the upscaled versions used different rips as source, then if those rips didn’t have the flashing there would be no need to remove it.
What I can say for certain is that the upscaled versions made it much easier for me to analyse Shawn’s playing, and the improved audio makes it much easier to hear.
Somebody else made 4k 60 FPS upscaled videos of Eric Johnson’s Austin City Limits performances and has posted them on YouTube. It makes everything about his playing so much easier to analyze and understand.
If I had these sources as a teenager, I’d have reached the level I’m at now a decade ago.
