The Obisidian Seminar is here!

Thanks for the quick reply @milehighshred. My goal is to be able to downpick and tremolo pick with speed, precision and endurance. I want to play stuff like Slayer’s “Praise of Death”, Metallica’s “Disposable Heroes”, Morbid Angel’s “Chapel of Ghouls” or Emperor’s “I Am The Black Wizards”, not to mention write stuff in that vein.

So based on what you’re saying, it’s recommended I focus on one technique at a time. I’m aiming for 200BPM as a minimum for downpicking. I’ll take it one exercise at a time and see how the progress goes.

As for practice method, does it make sense the way I outlined in my previous post? i.e. picking the tempo, setting the timer, then doing 3-5 “sets” of playing for about 2 minutes at that tempo (with small breaks between sets), and trying to increase it by a couple of BPM every time I practice? I tried to approach it in a gym routine mentality

No issues with focusing on both the down picking and speed picking then.

I would stick with the first drill until you get it to the 200 bpm goal for down picking though. If after a few days you can’t reach a faster speed, I would start breaking things down into smaller pieces. Even just doing one bar is a great place to start!

I continue to push my speeds with metronome practice. You can get a free eBook I made that details how and what I do here: Reach Your Fastest Speeds Playing Guitar - Mile High Shred

There’s definitely a gym approach to this, as I’m all about progressive overload. Your method is great for endurance, and CAN lead to increased speed. Rusty Cooley did a similar thing. For me, I want a number to shoot for, because even 1 bpm can make or break or a take.

I also have a few lessons on Patreon that talk about breaking things down to build them up to speed. Everyone can get a week free trial to check things out. I actually have a lesson on Chapel of Ghouls too!
