I never particularly said they were rare, this was the only known person I had ever seen do the fingerstyle version. And out of the players I had listened to I could only think of certain situations in regards to plectrum pickers version beyond the open string variant. Never really thought to google search it, but thanks for the heads up. Theres a specific song that I cant remember where the player does it with a pick, but I dont know where I saw it, or who it was.
Probably not the same song/player but one of my favorite Eric Johnson songs named “S.R.V.” features this technique in the second solo and he does it with a pick. Cool tune.
I am not sure if this is the one, but he does a nice job of it for sure.
