Trying to decipher the 5 note picking pattern for this lick

I would definitely go with Bakerman/Joe’s way for the lick. The timing I tried for every other approach (sweep, alt., etc.) was off. There might be a legato solution mixed with picking but I’m not invested enough to try

Apologies. I have not been active on the forum in some time and had not realized the nomenclature and the approach had changed.

I’m gonna go ahead and dissent with the D D U D U and advocate alternate picking groups of ten. IMO didn’t feel too bad.

I guess it sort of depends on we’re trying to figure the most efficient way vs what he’s actually doing. Your way, like everything I’ve ever seen you play, is awesome. I don’t think that’s how the guy in the video actually played it though.

@joebegly I admit I’m not the best at analyzing playback, but his hand IMO looks smoother than what a DD UDU pattern would look like. Not to mention in think DD UDU would be harder to play.

I feel similar, but I did manage a few repeats of the DDUDU and I can kind of see how it would work, but I can’t say it was intuitive at all. If I were to deviate from alternate picking and include a double downstroke to make the loop start on the same pickstroke, I would probably go with DUDUD DUDUD because the DDU version trips me up big time.
