I switched over now to Jazz III XL Tortex 1.4mm after trying Black Jazz III XL, Red Jazz III XL, Primetone Jazz III XL and Ultex Jazz III XL, I like the ultex and primetone as backups. I wish I could get a Tortex version of this pick with some grip like the Primetone and it would be my ultimate pick.
Interesting how personal preferences can differ. I couldn’t get over the lack of edge bevel on the thicker Tortex Jazz III XLs.
Dunlop 477-207, 2mm thick yet strum well and never get caught behind the string. Not the crispest sounding attack but I dig it. I am a double escape motion guy. For a crisp attack I use John Petrucci Jazz III. As different as they are it’s easy to go back and forth between them.
I switched guitars. Went back to my Tele (from the PRS SE CUSTOM) because the volume knob was getting in my way.
The Tele doesn’t have a volume knob “there”, so there’s no problem.
Went back to Pickboy picks, 1.00 mm.
I’ve started using Ultex jazz III XL on acoustic. I don’t like it so much for electric though. I still use the carbon fibre Jazz III for that. Just something about the carbon fibres tone that I really like on the electric.
Ultex sharp for the win. 1.14, I can’t imagine playing anything else. But, I would try the Swiss picks all these guys are so fired up on. You never know.
Recently I’ve been using Dunlop Flex .88mm. I had been trying the Jazz XLs for a while and don’t like the lack of bevel, I might end up getting a thicker flex, they came in a big dunlop multipack and it was the only thickness in the pack. They feel like a smoother Jazz XL to me.
The Pettrucci trinity picks are still a solid one for me - I like having a wider area to grip than I can get with the standard Jazz III, I think the XL and Flex are a more preferred shape for me, like a longer pick with more exposed.
Didn’t read the entire thread but Dava seems really under-represented. In the years since I played much guitar they seem to have disappeared in Canada and I can’t figure it out, they’re magic: perfect grip, Jazz 3 shape, indestructible. My guess is they lost the war for shelf-space but there’s always mail-order (looking at you, big box stores.)
Finally, someone else with the Dava love!
They’re amazing! You can’t kill them, I just wanted more to have around. BTW they come in Delrin, nylon and “gel” which I haven’t tried but they’re on order. They do everything I want from a pick, like a Jazz 3 but with better grip and no “click” on the attack when edge picking. I’ll post when the gels arrive, maybe they’re even better . . .
I use the gels I feel I get less chirp, but still a nice amount of attack. they glide nice. Im currently trying the larger rock gels and they have a bit more of a ‘flicka’ sound to it, but thats not amplified (amps are currently stored away). like the feel though.
Cool, that’s the way they were described to me. BTW it was actually amp sims that got me back into playing; band broke up years ago and not playing through loud amps took the fun out of it. The new Neural plugins are so accurate that they respond like an amp and here I am playing again. Fortin is my fave of theirs, they have a two week trial but it does require iLok which can be a headache.
They are only in storage as we are having some work done on the house. I’m not anti-amp sims at all really, but I never wanted my tones tied to my pc! (not that my current PC cuts any sort of musical mustard). I relatively bought a twonotes captor X so that I could practice silently and without a cab, bit I’ve not gotten on with it much (bit of a regretful purchase in many ways).
I’ll crabk the amps up in a month or two and find out if the ‘flicka flacka’ sound comes through!
I think Cory Wong uses Dava picks. I’m a big fan of his.
I tried the picks some time back but moved on. This could be because of the grip / hand position I was using at the time. I’ve changed both, so I’m experimenting with the best picks FOR ME NOW given the change I’ve made.
Also, Cory’s so damn funky! My struggles with sustaining sixteenth note funk strums was a big reason I changed my picking (again). ;o)
Wow I’d never heard Cory Wong before, wasn’t expecting that; what a groove, amazing bass player too. I love the FOR ME NOW disclaimer, that’s my thinking these days. Facts are often hard to come by but opinions, not so much ; )
