2nd year guitarist saying hello from UK

Hey fellow guitar lovers.

Been playing for a little over a year, love all types of music from Vai to Dylan, Blues to Metal and plenty in between.

So far I’m self taught, and I’ve been practicing mainly pentatonic scales, chords and such. But kept wanting to play 3NPs but always stumbled and had no idea why.
I recently watched the cracking the code youtube vids and finally understood what was happening (or more so not happening) from a mechanical perspective.

  • I can comfortably play pentatonic but not really above maybe 90 bpm for 16ths so nothing like most of the players here, so I know I’ve come to the right place!!

I look forward to benefiting from joining this community and taking my technique to the next level.

Hey Jesse, welcome! Seems you came to the right place!

Couple of quick thoughts about this:

have you seen the recent update to the primer? Try the “speed tests” in there and let us know how they go! I am willing to bet that you will score much higher than 90bpms with most motions

Also, if you feel like it you could post a video of your picking so we can help you better. To get started, you could try to pick as fast as you can on a single string. No fretting, no metronome, no brain  we’ll take it from there!

Thanks very much for the helpful advice. I have found the testing motions stuff very helpful and will keep referring to it. I’ve also just filmed and will be trying to post it shortly. Really appreciate the help and support.
