2WPS Batio lesson chunking pattern

After viewing the 2WPS slanting videos in the Batio section of lessons have a few questions.

There is an ascending and descending exercise for this “chunk pattern”

Ascending

E string = 9 10 12 = UP-DOWN-UP
B string 9 10 12 = DOWN-UP-DOWN

Is this how 2WPS is supposed to work by rotating the wrist and both pads of the palm?

B string 9 10 12 = DWPS for 9 and 10, UWPS for 12, jump to 9 on the E string to clear
E string = 9 10 12 = UWPS for 9 from B string, then DWPS for 10 and 12

wrist rotates from thumb palms side visible to both both pads of palm down on UWPS.

Hi!

Are you referring to the Pickslanting Primer? What we show you in those chapterized lessons is one way to do it, and the hand closeups there are what you want to look at. I know we’ve used the term “rotation” to describe this, but I think a better way of looking at it is wrist flexion and extension, i.e. bending the wrist like a motorcycle grip. I believe we also use that term in those lessons and that’s probably more responsible for the changes in the movement.

The “uwps” or “downstroke escape” position is when the wrist is more extended, and the “dwps” or “upstroke” escape is when it is more flexed. The contact points are somewhat less important. You can even make these movements with no palm contact points, i.e. floating forearm.

However before you get into any of this I would make sure your basic picking motions, the uwps and dwps versions, are working smoothly. Those are the simplest motions you can make in guitar, and the ability to make those basic movements with good hand synchronization while playing one-way pickslanting licks can solve a lot of future problems. Phrases like this, for example:

These are probably the two most straightforward phrases for testing basic uwps and dwps picking motion. Have you tried them and how are they working out?
