A little bit of lenny

While not the typical content of CTC, I’m finding dealing with high action on 13-53 and high clean dynamics very challenging. And a lot of fun too!

Been using the rounded side of the teardrop pick too. I find the picking hand needs to build strength over time. Not quite making those bends yet

Jesus, that IS high action. I thinbk you’re well above SRV there - his tech has said 5/64" on the treble and 7/64" on the bass, which comes out at about 2mm and not quite 3mm, and yu look like you’re well above that.

There’s definitely a point above which notes “bloom”" and below which they “compress,” and I try to stay over that as well, but honestly I’ve found on my main Strat, which is a 9.5" radius American Standard that now has jumbos on it, that’s usually somewhere a little below 2mm, but I leave it at about 2mm (I’ll try to double check this afternoon) simply because it helps me get under the strings a little bit more and gives me better bending control.

Gorgeous song, and you do a very good job with it here.

Thanks Drew, really appreciate your comments.

Yeah that action thing, I’m going through a phase with this MIJ ever since I got it regretted with Jumbos, and I finally got around to getting that Super Reverb 64 built. I literally play with a screw driver near by, I find myself fiddling with the pickup heights and trem claw screws constantly. I can really hear what the guitar sounds like, this one has that woody thing going on with the frailin vintage hots, one of the reasons I’ve got them so low, I’ve raised the bridge a bit as it was a bit low in this clip from last night.

I’ve never looked at the real SRV setup numbers, I presumed that were were to many variables and man he’s SRV! My amps on 8 vol but the 2Ohm hotplate’s at -16db, prefect for home playing though, really enjoying it.

About the high action, as you said it’s that boom and high dynamics that I’m chasing here, dig in and the amp just screams in the most delightful way if I get it just right. The other thing is this guitar’s neck has zero bow even when the truss is fully disengaged, thus the crazy action up there, it doesn’t buzz or anything but I just love how it responds. I think I’m getting used to it, today my left had was coping with the bends better, I found my self anchoring on the neck differently up there, and this one is a bit of a chonker if you notice the shoulders.

Hope all good with you Drew.
