Alternate Picking + Hybrid Picking Run

Hey - I thought I’d just share this little run - dead easy, chimpanzee simple (probably why I stumbled onto it, gotta make the best of what you have)

Anyways, the CTC stuff that’s going in here is DSX (downstroke escape) and when I normally play I am a bit more pronated, but I’ve learned to supinate just a bit to get a mute for this occasion. Intervallic-ally it’s a R 2 3 with the 4 being a plucked note, and a small “rest” programmed in to not only buy some time to reset the starting pickstroke. It’s easy to do, and dovetails nicely with the rest of the “metronomic rock” vocab in my opinion.

In the video I applied it to D Harmonic Minor, but the basic concept is this;
U D U Hybrid pluck
----------------1-----
—1—2—3---------

That kind of rhythm-oriented licks is my favorite, and you’re getting a fantastic tone while playing that run!

Hey thanks, man! Glad you dug it. Hybrid picking is a powerful tool, it’s a strategy that dovetails nicely with pretty much everything. It’s handy if you’re limited like I am in technical ability!

Great stuff, I’ve always loved your phrasing.

Strong agreement on hybrid picking. Some things thay would be difficult become easy, and some things thay would be impossible become merely very difficult.

I’m finally opening to the idea of hybrid picking. Will give this a shot next time I find some time to practice.

This is so true.

Take a run at it, I’d advise maybe coming up with a “hybrid” version of a lick or sequence you are currently working on that just doesn’t want to co-operate!

I really, really wanted to develop a super tight mixed escape skillset (Don’t we all? hah!), buuut it really isn’t in the cards! I mean, I sort of have a DBX, but it’s a lot of work and hybrid picking makes similar string changes possible, with much less time invested. Don’t get me wrong, it’s still a lot of practice to get going, but the tangible ongoing progress is gratifying. As I get better at it, I am finding that the DSX that Tom Gilroy and I developed gets more solid over time and dovetails with some other strategies.

Since I posted this I have made quite a few advancements in utilizing a hybrid strategy with my musical vocabulary, and accepted some things about how I play. Mostly it’s about learning to recognize the advantages that my single escape (DSX) affords me, as well as the weaknesses and leveraging both to be able to execute solid musical ideas. Well, working towards executing solid musical ideas! hahaha I am well aware of how rough this is is, but I am certain it will evolve further! I thought I’d share some of my ideas that I am working on!
