Alternating between styles

Hey guys, do any of you alternate between the picking styles of Michael Angelo Batio and Eric Johnson/Yngwie Malmsteen? Sometimes when I try that, I get stuck. Anyone have suggestions?

Do you mean go from a mostly DWPS style to a two way pick slanting style?

Yes, that’s exactly what I mean.

Yeah I’m also still struggling a bit to swap smoothly between alternate picking and the ecobony picking bits in a DWPS scenario. But slowly over time things seem to get better. I guess we all learn at different paces and just need to be patient and persistent

That’s the same doubt I had. Being a mostly DWPS I faced some challenges when trying to play other people’s solos/licks trying to use DWPS only. Here’s a solo from Europe’s The Final Countdown I recorded today:

Initially I was trying to play the entire solo using DWPS only but, few parts simply didn’t feel right when I re-arranged the positions, also didn’t sound right neither, so I ended up using rotation and UWPS for some specific passages.

So, my conclusion is to use your primary picking technique whenever possible (in my case DWPS), and switch to 2WPS or UWPS if the situation requires it and you’re unable to get the same result/sound using a single picking technique.
