Andy Wood "Wheel Hoss"

Getting back up to speed on editing interviews, including the long-overdue all-acoustic second meeting with Andy Wood. Here’s a quick outtake of the Bill Monroe classic Wheel Hoss. You’ll note the usual mixture of pickslanting and crosspicking moves here, including fine-grained thumb control for edge picking / attack. The Blue Chip picks are super slippery and I personally find it a little tricky to get volume out of them — maybe I just haven’t found the sweet spot yet. But Andy does just fine here.

He is soo good it’s almost infuriating

Being free from almost any mechanical limitation he can devote most of his energies to think about the music, and it shows!

I wonder… does he reduce the angle of his edge picking to get more volume? Is that what you meant by “thumb control for edge picking / attack”?

He does! And we talk about it in the interview - there was another great clip we pulled way back when we were offloading footage where Andy discusses this:
