Are you keeping the same form as your dsx economy when ascending?
If you are, it’s possible that your ascending sweeps are getting a bit jammed which you’d also be able to hear.

Try rotate your arm slightly when ascending so that you have smooth sweeps.

The only thing that seems to work is “kind of” like that, but a sort of shoulder push. It’s semi effective, but I have done it a ton for years in my elbow playing. Doing this seems to invite old habits. 1nps sweeps are fine ascending, it’s any attempt at a scalar economy type sweep ascending that courts disaster! hahaha

ounds good, vibrato reminds me of Bill Connors. The artifacts will disappear into hi-hats and cymbals - that’s why we have drummers…

ou could also try lower gain settings, it’s amazing what you can get used to.

I do this on and off, it’s helpful sometimes as is rolling down the tone - but then I don’t quite have the sizzle I like. I’m at about 70% on a Boss DS1 for comparison! Or 100% on a YJM MXR OD lol

Without seeing up close, it sounds like you may have a slight upward slant. Which works great for the dsx sweeping. But for the ascending sweeps, an upward slant will get jammed.

A lot of the two way economy guys lean slightly in the direction of the sweep. The Frank Gambale interview shows some good examples of this.

I’d recommend experimenting with this a little. No need to start it fast, just see if you can get the ascending runs to feel as smooth as the descending runs.

I practice economy picking as my sort of primary picking technique these days. I had a lot of issues with feeling like I was getting stuck with the pick, but after experimenting with my grip, form, and altering my slant to match the direction I’m going, it’s feeling good now.

Yeah, I have watched that, like 60x it’s awesome! Frank says he “leans into the turns” or something like that. I might try and do the same.

I’ll take a run at it - can’t hurt! I mean, the hybrid picking thing works really well if I can’t succeed at getting the economy stuff to work in that direction! Probably take a month to get warm and fuzzy with it…
