Ben Travers Zakk Wylde Picking Analysis

I hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas and that your credit cards are making it through the holiday season  Mine is hurting…

So @Frylock and I had a great back and forth on PM and the conversation developed for it to be shared with the group. Some of you may heard of a guy named Ben Travers. He is a fantastic gypsy guitar player and can also shred like a beast. He did a great video covering some Ozzy and BLS solos:

@Frylock suggested that as Ben uses a lot of edge picking he could be using DWPS with swiping or UWPS especially at the 4:54 mark.

As I am a newbie with analysis, I would love anyone’s comments on Ben’s picking style and if there is anything we can use and take away from it. Also is it OK for me to be posting other players I see on the forum for analysis? I know that YM, MAB, etc. are analyzed and uploaded a lot but don’t want to clutter the technique section if it is only for members.

Thanks so much!

Hi! Unclear what’s going on at that time marker, and it’s sort of academic because if what you’re asking is how do you play Zakk Wylde lines, this is one of those questions that has a blissfully straightforward answer. Zakk fits the downward pickslanting format in such a traditional way, that any of the various downard pickslanting hand movements including wrist, elbow, forearm, and blends of those, will work just fine. Just make sure you’re clear conceptually on what the movement is supposed to accomplish, and what kinds of fretboard patterns will fit with it.
