Bernth Covers Pickslanting with Magnet Footage

Bernth got a magnet and cites Troy in his video. It looks like he conflates escape motion and pickslanting

Odd video. lol If he’s going to use the terminology from here, he should’ve researched a little more. He calls what is actually downward pickslanting, upward pickslanting, and vice-versa. I also don’t really think he has a true USX motion - his descending pentatonic scale he plays throughout looks more like DBX and isn’t really that fast.

At least he cites his source, right @Bernth?

Edit to add: he does says escape motion at 5’30 and in his summary/recap. Cool to see it’s basically the PG lick he demonstrates.

His pentatonic does seem DBX. I wonder if it’s because he is DSX so his USX/DWPS is very slight

Unfortunately “pickslanting” is how Troy introduced the concept to the world, and it’s a piece of verbiage that pretty effectively communicates to someone reading it an intuitive idea of what it means.

Escape and escape motions aren’t as catchy and require a lot more thinking about, so a lot of people who aren’t here on the forum will know/think of pickslanting still, even though it’s outdated - possibly especially for someone like Bernth who is, frankly, such an insane guitar player that he doesn’t need to spend any time over here, or would probably find just practicing with his already well established and efficient technique a better use of time anyway.

Yeah, I can totally see how he thought “DPS” is for DSX, and how “UPS” is for USX. I never think about PS, just escape directions, and really love the modern notation, as it’s obvious (unlike PS, that needs a convention to know what “up” or “down” mean).
