But even on that point, it really doesn’t take much. Even just a small adjustment is all. I think particularly upstroke descending economy is generally just awkward at first for most people and takes time to get used to. Many over embellish what it takes to do it because it feels really foreign at first.
He uses a pull off to turn the run around.
It’s mainly because my natural picking is close to the Gypsy jazz style, from that it takes a lot of rotation to economy pick decending.
I think you’re right in what you’ve said about it
So he’s mixing in a bit of the Yngwie pull off mechanic to make his economy picked lines work more comfortably for him?
Same, I use fully extended grip and pretty supinated. This setup, for me at least, doesn’t work so well with two way economy.
I’ve been using trigger grip lightly supinated setup for the two way stuff and the rotation needed is minimal in comparison.
Well more so that the pick strokes line up so the lick can be cycled using the same directional picking pattern as before.
I would say decending is the trickiest for most people. If you are a wrist predominant player, and you are used to the subtleties of wrist playing, descending economy typically takes a little more broad forearm elbow movement on the turnaround of the lick, so you are kind of constantly changing between two fulcrum points.
Also, besides sweeping arpeggios, there’s not a lot of times in typical guitar playing anyone really has to do many consecutive upstrokes, so it feels strange and uncoordinated, where as there’s plenty of times you would use consecutive downstrokes (heavy palm muted chords etc…) so as guitar players were used to them. Also gravity. You could let your hand go limp on the strings and it could fall do all down strokes, whereas you have to use more effort to lift your hand in order to do all ups.
What’s even more impressive is that he appears to be using a sharp shaped pick. Out of all picks, I find those the most difficult to alternate pick anything with. It’s like they grab onto the strings too much and because you have such a small tip you need to make really small accurate movements.
Really? I can only use those. Pointy and with a slight bevel are my preferred. At the very least pointy. I honestly can’t image using any bit of edge picking with out one.
I haven’t come across this as an issue before. The only time I did was when trying to learn dsx wrist only, but I got the setup sort of… wrong, and the slant of the pick didn’t match up with the direction I was moving it.
It should cut through easy enough though, maybe you need to tweak something?
To be fair, I haven’t been practicing a lot over the last while, so it’s probably more my out of shape technique!
Nice to see some more content of players doing 3nps economy licks both ascending and descending instead of using economy picking just in one direction. Looking forward to this one, any idea when it will come out?
Had no idea who Brendon was. I only knew The Black Dahlia Murder by name but didn’t know anything about their guitar players.
Hopefully sometime in 2022, I’ll be picking this one up for sure.
This one come out yet?
Not yet. Soon, I hope!
Any ETA on when this will be released?
FYI though - if you really want some good content from Brandon you should check out his Shred Light District Patreon, he breaks down his own picking style pretty well in one video, and is pretty clear on it being based around USX and talks about how he lines up passages for that, and includes a Magnet style slow mo capture of his playing @crenfb91 @carranoj25
Also a lot of nice discussions on how he approaches phrasing in there.
Yeah hes a solid player. Honestly im on the fence about this but i think i might prefer to have both strong USX and DSX so as to not have to restrict myself on what im playing. That opinion if mine is flexible however. Hes an astonishing player either way
Assuming you have a good starting single escape picking mechanic that allows you to palm mute as needed, you’re probably best off developing a helper motion for mixed escape with that, and then the nearest DBX motion.
still hanging out for this, please CTC gods, bless us all
did this ever come out?
