Buying a smartphone for The Magnet: Is 120 fps the sufficient criteria?

Hi everyone,

I’m about buying a new rather cheap phone for magnet view filming, considering the Samsung Galaxy A17 5G, which offers 120 fps slow-motion recording.

When I asked AI whether it would be suitable for Magnet recordings, it suggested the Galaxy S23 or S24 instead, because of uncertainties about how the A17 records and saves its slow-motion footage.

I intend to transfer the original video files to my laptop and do all the frame-by-frame analysis there.

When choosing a smartphone for The Magnet, is 120 fps slow-motion recording all I need to look for, or are there other important technical requirements regarding how the 120 fps footage is recorded and saved?

Thanks for your advice!

I think the A17 5G only records at 120fps in “slow motion” (i belive), and if you edit, you lose the frame rate. Unlike the iPhone, where you have to record in slow motion mode, on the smartphone you have to record in “Video Pro” and set it to 120fps. This way it will record at 120fps in real time, and even if you edit, you won’t lose the frame rate. In this case, the A17 5G doesn’t do that.

I have an A54 and it only goes up to 60 FPS, but my wife’s is an S24 Plus and it goes up to 120 FPS, and I use it for recordings for CTC.

Some cheaper Xiaomi phones record at 120-240 FPS.

But if it’s just for study purposes, 60 FPS might be enough. If you adjust the speed in the Vimeo player, you can still see some details clearly.
