For those who have seen the Strunz and Farah material you may have heard Jorge Strunz mention his previous fusion band Caldera that he played in prior to hooking up with Ardeshir Farah. I finally remembered to YouTube Caldera last night and man it’s killer material. If you’re into stuff like Al Di Meola, Mahavishnu Orchestra, Weather Report and even early Santana then do yourself a favour and check 'em out. Latin grooves, funk/RnB undertones and great melodies from a variety of instruments. Not even mentioning the electric work of Strunz who carves out some really deadly lines on the geeter. I’ll have to try and find the records–apparently there’s four of them. They are precisely what I hoped they would be.
Even if you’re not a huge fan of this style it’s worth checking out some tracks to hear Jorge’s swiping chops on the electric twanger. This is assuming that he’s been playing the same way since he mid-70’s, of course.
Tunes:
(Jorge’s clean solo in the 2nd half of the song tho)
(Hi-gain solo in 2nd half again. Check for McLaughlin patterns)
(Acoustic playing on this one–beware of lick at 2:40)
Have a great week!
