Challenging alternate picking run

Working on this pentatonic run with a more floating right hand, works great for me.
i use a downword pickslant and an angel. Pick is a Blue Chip TAD 60.

Would love to see some vids of you guys playing this run at speed with alternate picking.

Great playing! Is this the pentatonic descending 3s lick? If so, I posted some time ago a method to play this using two positions + downward pickslanting:

Since this involves some stretching, for me it is only comfortable to play from about the 7th fret (B minor penta).

I can also play the same lick in a single position with “inside picking” up until sextuplets at more or less 100bpm, while to go faster in a single position I’d have to use outside picking + swiping.

Yeah, that’s the same line. Nice playing!
I try to stay away from big stretches as i have small hands. It makes alternate picking harder but it is easier on the lefthand.

I know another way with same fingeringin one position but that involves a smart way of hamering on and pull off.; i can even play it faster that way.
I will post a clip of that also.

This is a classic jimmy page lick. I play it with dwps and swiping.

Its a classic lick, so I chicken out and play classic hammers and pull offs!! Authentic!

I think it sounds better that way to be honest.

Do you mean you include some hammers from nowhere when changing strings? Otherwise there will still be some groups of 1note-per-string passages.

Sorry, I was a bit quick to post - I only us pull offs.
Picking each string change. Alternate picking strokes.

I know I have used hammers before, but since doing lots of 2WPS, it feels a little strange. It sounds super smooth with the hammers if you get it right!

Tommo, yep, exactely!
With hammer ons frome nowhere, pull offs and mini 2-up sweeps.

My post was not about what sounds better but to tackle this run with alternate picking in one position at high speed.

Here’s a way to get the lick very fast and smooth. It has pull-offs Hamer-ons frome nowhere and 2-up mini sweeps. Using downward pickslant and upward on the mini sweeps. This is 16th triplets at about 135. Properly warmed up i can hit 140.

Here it is at slow speed.
The trick is to pick very light in order to get the hammer-ons from nowhere sound equal in volume to the picked notes. It is something the great Allan Holdsworth ( RIP) uses to get certain things up to speed.

Nice thread! Inspiring to see different ways of playing the same lick.
I do it like this:
“Miller picking”, slow and fast, 16th note triplets at 120
Apologies for the video being a bit blurry, I overestimated the amount of light in the room.
Pick used is a red Jazz III.

Your way of doing it feels very hard for me, but after trying it for a few minutes, I can already feel the benefits of it. If I get this smoother, it will be a very useful technique.

To update from the last thread on this pattern… wait for it…

I still can’t do this very well.

Right hand is fine, left hand won’t play…er…ball. Or indeed guitar, apparently.

is this the way you’re doing it in the original clip?

Yes Jake, that is the alternate picking version.
There is no swiping involved, strickt alternate picking starting with a downstroke.

Nitro, you mean the version with the hammer -ons, pull-offs and mini sweep?
Once you feel the flow of this you can play certain things very fluid at high speed.

Also a great way!, Although i don’t like that sound from the pull-offs.
