Changing pick grip after 30 years

Hey there, everybody after all the years 30+of holding the pic between the pad of my thumb on my index fingers I’m trying to hold it more like you guys Troy and also guys like Joe Bonamassa as I could see during soloing my arm tends to move a lot and I don’t have a great pick attack though it works well for rhythm playing I’ll upload a couple videos the problem that I’m having is when I hold it the new way my index finger knuckles really start to hurt and I am not gripping the pic very hard at all no death grip. Also, I noticed it’s very hard to play funk rhythms, James Brown, etc. thank you in advance. Looking forward to learning from all you guys.

When it comes to the perfect pick grip, I found this video helpful - Minimal Effort Pick Grip – Cracking the Code

Troy essentially suggests letting your hand completely relax, then put a pick between your thumb and index finger and, using the minimum amount of effort, grip it. This video was key for me in acknowledging a three finger trailing edge grip is right for me.

If your knuckles are hurting, then I would surmise that it’s not a good grip for you or your joints.

I agree with this. If the pick grip hurts, it’s wrong for your particular hand. There’s so much variation in hand size, thumb length, finger length, joint strength etc. that trying to emulate a position is a fool’s errand. Just find something that works for you.

I like Troy’s minimal effort pick grip, but the way he demonstrates it is quite frankly not great. He uses a Jazz III pick which is very small and uniform, and it gets covered by shadow when he puts the pick in so you can’t really tell which way it’s oriented. Just for the record, the tip is facing the floor and not off to a side.
