Compressor pedal, now I get it

After many years of never really " getting " compressor pedals, I guess I do now. The thing is I never really wanted what the pedal could do for me, or just didn’t understand how to get the most out of one. But now that I am concentrating on better technique and picking much much softer and playing with a lighter touch. I get it. I picked up a Tone Corset a couple years ago so it was sitting on a shelf. I am still figuring out how to maximize the use of it. So being a nube to the compressor pedal, what are your fave pedals and how are you utilizing them?

Origin Effects Cali 76 small format, for bass. Haven’t done too much with guitar, but tons with bass.

Distortion from the amp. That’s my favorite compressor.

No offence but I’m not sure it’s a good idea to constantly play and practice with a compressor on instead of trying to be consistent and clear with your picking alone. Let alone you already have tons of compression if you play with distortion.

No offense taken, I could have been a bit more clear in my post also. I should back up a tad. First of all I don’t play with that much gain, certainly not like modern levels of gain. And Most specifically when using a Strat (which I am most always using one ) with a stacked Strat pup, I find certain phrases or techniques barely audible. Like for instance the tapping portion of YJM’s I’ll see the light tonight. Or dance the night away by Van Halen. Also I am not squashing the shit out of the signal either, just enough to get some of those phrases to stand out a bit. Also I am really working on playing as softly as possible which is a big departure from my time trying to wring the shit out of the notes like I was trying to choke a squirrel to death, or something like that.
