DBX tremolo - trapped or escaping?

I’m trying to teach myself to pick DBX cleanly because that’s what the music I play demands (Irish, Bluegrass, Classical).

I can do a smooth single string tremolo at 150bpm but how do I know if the motion is trapped or escaping? I’m unable to film myself so what should I look out for or feel?

Great starting point!

The short answer is… play things that require a double escape motion! Like a bluegrass roll, arpeggiated chord etc. Then the priorities are:

  • does it feel smooth even when you speed up, or does it feel bouncy /tiring and severely speed-limited?
  • does it sound good? (if you have a way to record yourself it would be ideal, as it can be difficult to judge one’s playing in the moment)
