Dear Troy John McLaughlin Picking

John McLaughlin’s technique

John’s thumb pad is ALWAYS facing the audience, his thumb rests on the guitar strings and his other fingers are in the air

Therefore, is it fair to say John’s technique in general is DSX with diagonal 2 o’clock picking?

You pointed out some time ago that his technique is a mix of DSX and USX I have never seen mac use upstroke escape before, never

Thanks Man :slight_smile:

@Scotty can you cite where?

I’ve only ever heard Troy point to John as sort of a poster child for DSX. I’ve also not seen an upstroke escape from John.

McLaughlin is almost entirely DSX, though he will occasionally use a bit of two-way pickslanting for certain patterns - I’ve posted several live videos of him here, and I think I point out where he uses it in every one of them. lol But this is not the same as having a USX technique, this is what used to be called a “helper motion”, to facilitate playing things where pure DSX doesn’t quite work.
