Decoding Josh Meaders picking

Really curious what people make of Josh’s technique. At 4:55 you get a pretty good view of his right hand as he plays these fast lines

From taking a lesson with him I know he does Down, Up, Hammer/Pull for 3nps, which makes sense for a traditional USX style + sweeping. But what’s confusing is he also says he does 4nps as D, U, D, Hammer, which would make it much harder than just pure alternate?

I feel like I am also seeing some DSX and mixed escape semi circular motion as well throughout the video. Curious what y’all make of his technique here!

his technique is crazy good. It looks like has uses a three finger grip - I have never noticed that before.

What makes you think this would be more difficult that pure alternate? I’m not being argumentative, i’m just curious. Do you think that, given his approach the 3 nps, he would play something like D, U, hammer, hammer?

In short he’s primarily a wrist USX + ascending economy picking player who uses a 3 finger pick grip, but is also good at DBX and sweeping in both directions which enables him to break through the limitations of USX.

He incorporates a lot of legato as you said to economize the picking, but his description of his method isn’t entirely accurate. He says that when playing 4 notes per string that he picks every note except the last note, but in practice he actually picks the first two notes(with his USX motion) and uses legato for the next 2, which conforms perfectly with USX.
