I know that he uses it in the opening triplets of the miracle man solo but from what I’ve heard him say…he’s mostly an alternate picker…BUT a lot of his top speed pentatonic stuff at times looks like he may be using economy picking at times. It’s hard for me to tell though. He locks in his wrist and arm and makes a fist when he is maxing out his speed. And he may be the fastest pentatonic picker around…I would love to know if anyone has any more insight into this. Also @Troy PLEASE try to get an interview with him! PLEASE!! That would be better than Christmas!
I can’t remember where I saw it but he definitely uses economy picking. I’m sure he employs whichever technique makes what he is trying to play easiest.
He might use it sometimes. I haven;t seen him use it but if you want to see what it looks like when someone uses it, watch a video of Yngwie live. When he switches to economy picking the motion looks very different from when he’s alternate picking. A bandmate of his said it looked like Yngwie was “knitting” because of the way the motion looked to him.
By economy do you mean “mix of sweeping and alternate”? Then yes, all the time, in nearly identical fashion to Yngwie and EJ. Reminder to check the search function in the upper right. I normally hate searching forums but this one is super fast and easy to use. Discourse is great.
Here’s where we have discussed this before:

Thanks for the time and insight!
