Hey guys, I’ve been experimenting with double escape motion picking on scalar lines recently and hit a bit of a wall when it came to playing above 16th notes at 150 - 180 bpm (I.e. above tumeni notes speeds). I could just about do it but it was very tense and not very reliable.
I was using a rotational mechanic with a bit of wrist extension and flexion so that the rotation would give me freedom on the upstroke and the extension on the downstroke. I was finding that when it did feel comfortable that I was reverting back to my two way pickslanting mechanics which is my normal way of playing faster lines (I use Bruno style economy picking where I sweep unless it’s impossible).
But I was watching the Olli Soikelli video and started to wonder if we’ve ever seen someone with double escape motion that hits full on shred speeds of 200bpm+ using this style. While it’s virtuosic and expressive is there a speed limit to this technique? And if so what do we think it is?
There is of course value to alternate picking like this and I use it in my acoustic playing all the time but for speed is it a better option than economy picking or two way slanting alternate picking?
