Whats up, guys!? After watching a few videos, I realized that i am a primarily upwardpickslanter. I decided to work on downward pickslanting, and this is what i got after a few days practicing. What do you think? For some reason its harder for me to keep track of the string at “medium” speeds , and ascendig runs feel even worse. Is there any reason for this? And what are your thoughts on my hand movements? I dont feel it tensing up, but im not sure if i have this rotational thing going on.
Better lighting will massively help your video quality, but from what I can tell, you’re slanting your pick but not your pathway. That won’t change much about string changing. If you pull those upstrokes right away from the guitar you’ll find that the downstroke of the next string plays itself almost. Don’t worry about exaggerating the motion. That will reinforce it.
What do you mean with “pathway”? Thanks for you comment btw.
I mean as far as slanting being about creating certain motion angles, not just tilting the pick and still having to hop over strings. Downstrokes push into the guitar and upstrokes back right away from it.
Hi Pedro! This sounds great. As mentioned, it is hard to comment on the movements because the video is dark. But the sound is what matters and again it sounds just fine.
I don’t think you do. Your movement looks like elbow flexion and extension. Which is fine - there is nothing wrong with elbow movement. It is fast and powerful. Don’t worry about doing forearm rotation. It is not a requirement.
To get a better look at what you are doing, I recommend filming yourself in front of a good light source, like a window during the daytime that does not get direct light. This will give your phone a bright and even light source, for a much clearer picture.
If you have access to a phone with slow motion capability, that’s even better - the video will generally be clearer, even when viewed at normal speed.
As to the slanting of the “pathway”, the key to pickslanting is that the pick travels an angled path of movement, so it doesn’t hit the strings, or “swipe”, during the string changes. I’m not hearing any sloppyness during the changes, so I wouldn’t worry about it too much. If you do film a clip in more light, we’ll get a better look.
Thank you very much, Troy! I´ll make sure to film a better clip for my next post.
