DSX high to low string changes

I have been told a few times on here that I’m a DSX player. Indeed, I seem to get along well with DSX picking patterns, such as those on Tommo’s Metromonic Rock.

Going from low to high I feel very comfortable with changing strings on a downstroke. But, going from high to lower strings I feel more comfortable changing on an upstroke.

Why do high to low string changes feel more comfortable like this for me? I’m playing with a three finger trailing edge pick grip.

I’d guess it’s because you’re tracking with your elbow, which also has a natural DSX path. So, as you’re descending, the elbow is moving you slightly back towards the plane of the strings and interfering with your escape.

I’d have to see it to be sure, but this isn’t uncommon in my experience teaching.

The reverse can happen to and it actually beneficial. A primary USX player can get some “help” in an ascending outside change because of the natural DSX path of the elbow.

How fast are we talking? Do you have a very shallow escape in general? How are you with playing a repeating six pattern with outside picking (A B C D E F looped)?

Thanks, guys. I really should have posted a video! I will make one this weekend and post it here.

@Tom_Gilroy it is possible that I am tracking with my elbow. I have never thought that this was the reason and I will have to be aware of this when I’m playing and see if you’re right. It’s very possible you are.

@Riffiduclous Maybe around 115 bpm max. I’m trying to work on my coordination a lot. I don’t play that pattern as a loop.

Another thing I’ve seen is that some DSX players will pronate a little on their escapes, but also use pronation to track to the lower strings. This can also introduce problems.

Ok. This is still in the realm of string hopping speed, so anything can be happening - I’ll keep an eye out for your video!
