DWPS with no rest stroke?

Hi everyone.

I am experimenting with DWPS at the moment because I want to be able to play upstroke escapes. If I apply a rest stroke, I can pull it off easily. I am wondering what you are supposed to do on the highest string, since there is no string to rest your pick on. Also, the way the pick travels is relatively long when the rest stroke is applied. I can pick faster and with less effort when I use a neutral slant or UWPS and I also manage to keep the pick closer to the string after a stroke. I would like to have smaller movements even with DWPS. Is the larger movement the price I´ll have to pay for using DWPS?

Also, as soon as I go into DWPS and try to play without a rest stroke, my picking becomes inconsistent. Sometimes the pick will “dive” after a DS, sometimes it will “hop” over the string after a DS instead of just going through the string. Any tips are welcome - or also the insight that that´s just what happes when one tries playing DWPS without the rest stroke.

Have a good monday,

I would quickly suggest 2 things:

  1. make a video to show the issue
  2. do not worry about making “small movements”, just worry about being fast and smooth

Agree with @tommo - just going to add. that Rick Graham uses planting/rest stroke in the following way - if you’re going to play the next higher string, plant on that. If you’re staying on the same string, work on doing one pickstroke and pulling the pick back to the string immediately to prepare for the next one. So you’re planting on the same string you play.

Maybe it’ll help if you’re trying to get that tactile feedback of touching the “next” string.

EDIT: Sorry- wrong video, here it is
