Economy picking etude and mini lesson - 9th arpeggios

It looks like you still have an upward pickslant on the downstroke sweeps which will get jammed. You might need to adjust your setup to a more supinated arm position to get that downward pickslant.

Yep! Absolutely right, and I have been trying for quite some time to make it more supinated, thusly gaining access to a musical mute and downstroke sweeping but alas to no avail. Big 1nps arpeggio sweeps, sure. Economy picked scale+arpeggio things are even worse than demonstrated.

Perhaps some of us are simply unable to do some things? Hahaha I could be the ctc poster child for “failed at picking” lol perhaps a new seminar…hehehe

If you don’t mind a suggestion, exploring a more horizontal picking path would possibly allow you to achieve a more supinated posture.

I found that a lot easier than simply twisting my forearm while staying at the sale angle.

What does your form look like when you do the big 1nps sweeps? Does the pick move with ease when ascending the sweep?
If it does, it might be worth trying to copy that form, arm position, grip, pickslant and see if you can get that working with economy picking.

When using my pronated wrist form, it’s a bit swishy sounding. It crosses the strings sure, but there’s a sort of “scratch” and quasi “garage spikes” thing going on - which is why I usually hybrid-pick anything that normal people downstroke sweep. Now, when using my “mutated-elbow” form it works just fine sweeping in either directions. Well, it’s not beautiful - but it’s certainly better.

It’s a great suggestion and I am open to those; I would absolutely LOVE to play the Tommo-Econo lick without incident! BUT! I think I learned a thing or two since I first started trying to learn CTC concepts and actually, looking at my attempts at playing with both forms and comparing the two I notice this about myself;

Observations;

  1. My pronated form is what I adopted in order to get closer to playing DBX stuff. However, as I look at it - I think I pronated because the Floyd screws were in the way on the tree of my guitars. Like… all of my guitars except one!

  2. My Elbow form likely evolved as a similar thing; notice how I kick the elbow out in my magnet video? The reason is to keep the hand flat, and avoid the Floyd. And it works, but it’s a tiring posture. Messing around with it… I can actually do a “wrist motion” instead of an elbow one. Further messing around I can sort of do it without kicking my elbow out. Feels… alien, but maybe worth checking out. sigh. It’s kind of annoying almost that every breakthrough or discovery for me is so far removed from what I have grown comfortable with! Oh well…

Hmm might be time to start torturing poor Tommo again for a couple of months with some TC’s.

I think a TC is the way to go! Good luck!

Last hijack of Tommo’s lick; I made quite a few changes in the RH and I think I am experiencing some success. Lots of stuff to work out (as always) and refine/beautify but I think it’s a good starting point for 2-way economy picking. The Tommo-econo-lick was the catalyst! I harmonized it to Cmaj/Amin. Thanks Tommo for the cool lick!

This seems so much better than previous attempts with your other grip and setup. Keep it up!
