Economy picking made my alternate picking better?

Thanks to this cracking the code thing im excited about playing again been in a rut for years… been listing to Eric gales and also got inspired to play differently … i have been a strict alternate picking Paul Gilbert is so good so he has it figured out and he say alternate pick everything so i have for the last 10 years but my phrasing got so boring to me anyways i started working on economy picking 2 weeks ago and i got the fire again !!! thanks to you Eric Johnson video i seen on you tube once i get the dough im gonna invest in cracking the code because these are the best guitar lessons anyone could possible get !!! anyways practicing the economy picking has also improved my alternate picking ??? i figure its because im practing more up strokes ??? not sure anyways it intrigued me and figured it might do the same for others

might just be nothing more than it being a new fresh stimulus. Keeping it fresh goes a long way

each new technique opens many new doors

thank you new to using any forms lol

nice licks, sounds a bit like Paul G

not sure how aware you are of Yngwies technique but basically he uses alternate mixed in with economy and some pulloffs thrown in depending on the situation. Economy picking for fast ascending runs and then for descending its alt mixed with a pulloff (if needed) to ensure he starts the new string on a downstroke etc. He uses downward pick slanting of course

yes and wanna know more about it … like exercises and licks etc what does the downward slant picking dvd cover ??? eric johnson too??? i wanna pull the trigger on a dvd and would like to learn more the style how eric johnson goes about it and if yngwies uses the same method that is a win win haha … the first part in the video btw is economy picking 2nd pg sounding stuff alternate picking

well the ‘volcano’ seminar is all about Yngwies style etc. Picking, sweeping etc

The ‘cascade’ is Eric Johnsons style. Its similar to Yngwie style in the sense that they both generally use dwps only and make everything else work around that

The “antigravity” seminar is all about 2 way pickslanting using Michael Angelo as the main subject but also touching on Paul Gilbert, Vinnie Moore and others.

Each seminar comes with lots and lots of extra licks etc

I bought all 3 seminars starting back in 2014 or 15ish…then recently joined the Masters in Mechanics here…which is probably the best deal if u got the $$$ for it. of course at first it will be massive info overload

I didnt get quite as much out of the Eric Johnson “Cascade” seminar as i did out of the volcano and antigravity ones. In any case I think they serve mainly to give us ideas and starting points for our own explorations.

Eric does economy picking when he does his "5"s licks. So if u took a pent box it would be something like this:

DUDUDDUDU etc so you see after the 5th note he economy picks back to the G string and starts again etc

B—15–12-----------------
G-------------14–12--------14–12
D------------------------14--------------14–12 etc

so it fills you in on what the guys that are doing that inspire you thus giving you the keys to everything which is great … iv been working on that pentaonic pattern straight for the last 2 weeks such a better feel with economy picking let me tell yall hahah ( what that being said been playing it for the last 15 years with a hit and miss )

whats your option on what material i should start with ???

haha, I aint gonna make any recommendations brother lol. If u have the $$ just go for Masters in Mechanics and then u have access to it all. Not only those 3 seminars but interviews with guys like MAB, Martin Miller, Andy Wood and many others with tons of close views of licks etc etc. u will be overwhelmed at first

u r using economy on the pent lick? how so? A Rick graham pattern might be like this:

G-------------12–14
D—12–14------------repeat and the eco picking would be UDDU repeated etc

… i guess im doing it backwards?? lol DUUD ?

well that would be for descending, right? lol

also i have fought using and pick for years thus to get speed and play licks i used hybrid picking … years ago i think i was like 13 i was reading ( dont remember where or anything like that ) it was on a jazz form and the guy was talking about holding the pick neutral ( or so i thought maybe i just read it wrong ) and that has held me up for yEARS !!! naturally my hand would do the pick slant thing and i fought not to do that … that was when i getting into fast picking etc i would set in front of a mirror and look at how my hand looked and if it look “ugly” im was so bull headed about looks instead of using what came natural … i dont even know what feel natural to me any more :frowning:

haha yep sorry iv had a few beers haha

We generally suggest starting with the Pickslanting Primer. Best intro to our stuff; covers most of the main topics in the seminars (Volcano, Cascade, Antigravity) and a great overview of picking technique. You can see all that’s included here:

We’ll be adding more over the coming months too. No DVDs but you can either get a download copy, or Masters in Mechanics subscription gets you access to everything on the site, tons more lessons + interviews. Definitely browse the site and let us know if you have any more questions!

haha. its funny but I cant watch most others play guitar. if someone had a magic wand and would give me the skills of Marty Friedman and/or Zakk Wylde…but I had to use their hand position, id definitely pass lol

Yngwies hands are pretty chill and relaxed

Paul Gilbert is cool now but he said he did the whole first RacerX album with his thumb bent in 2 backwards lol. Pretty sure he changed when he saw or found out how Yngwie held the pick

I mean, this is like the greatest most classic rock clip ever. it doesnt get any better. Phil Lynott with John Sykes on guitar in a small pub lol. John Sykes is one of my heroes but that bent right hand thumb is just gross lol

jake E Lee is another. one of my fave players but the picking motion just looks so awkward with way too many moving parts

i have been able to watch this … this whole entire time? lol

yes jake e lee is also a favorite of mine thought man he picked weird i watched that cbs ozzy video from the 80s i was like 10 i think lol would have been 2001 ? lol hey also have you noticed yngwies picking is different since he had that car accident ??? he flips his thumb before the accident he didn’t seem to do that maybe its all in my head idk

yeah i think he used to use the thumb a bit more. he prolly still does some though

this guy is awesome too. just effortless and precise. Panos Arvanitis. I guess he actually played at NAMM this year?
