Eric Johnson fives with Downstroke Escape

I have started to experiment with and use an upward pickslant action as I find my upstokes on my DWPS a bit limp. How does this effect the EJ DWPS stuff. such as the Descending Fives Lick? Do I always start on an upstroke? and the 2 note sweep on the fifth note is awkward following an upstroke.
I dont want to abandon the EJ style as I have put a lot of hours practice in.

I Hope this makes sense

Hey @DjangoUntrained, for the descending 5s I can think of two downstroke-escape (DSX) solutions:

  1. Same fretting as the EJ (USX) version, but each group of five is played as: U - D - U - pulloff - D. [courtesy of @7th11th]

  2. rearrange as 1 note on higher string + 2 notes on each of the lower ones. Pick each groups of 5 as U - U (sweep) - D - U - D

By the way, I changed the title in line with the new terminology and to make searching etc. easier for other users. Hope it’s ok, I think you can change it further if need be.
