Eric Johnson Position shifting

Near the end of this Eric Johnson pentatonics video Troy looks briefly at his position shifting in the Austin City Limits video:

The discussion is a little tossed off–as if we’d already been looking at that aspect of his technique, but I can’t find that antecedent discussion. I get the the sweeping and cross-neck stuff, but the thing about moving up or down the neck to get the off-kilter effect of three-note patterns without breaking the UPS 4 note-per string rule is really fascinating and there’s just barely a taste of it. There’s some in the Yngwie stuff, but I’d love to see more on how Eric uses it. Is there a real breakdown of it somewhere?

Apologies if I’ve missed something obvious–I’m new to the site and still finding how to navigate around in it.

Hi! Indeed, that animated feature was done as a kind of digest / overview. The position-shifting concept is handled at great length — some I work with would say, far too great a length — in the Cascade Seminar here:

It’s pretty much the subject of the entire 3+ hour thing. I apologize ahead of time!
