Eric Johnson trademark solo, accurate string and finger choice

hello,

in the song trademark by eric johnson, there is a solo at the end.

there are alot of ways to play it and all the youtube cover versions i watched the players get it wrong considering eric uses DWPS.

i am really struggling to get the exact notes and strings eric uses.
if anyone has a clue please share.

thank you.

What tabs are you using? What specific parts of the solo?
I have the book “play like Eric Johnson”
I can’t speak for that particular song, it is in the book but I haven’t taken a look at it. The transcriptions for Cliffs of Dover, Zap, and Desert Rose are pretty fantastic though.

I love that solo, but also have no clue how EJ “actually” plays it on the record. In terms of how it’s fretted, the Wolf Marshall EJ book may give us a clue, because based on how the book is written, it seems like Wolf sat down with EJ and went over the material note-for-note.

Here’s the transcription of the outro “Trademark” solo from the Wolf book:

I have all of EJ’s tab books from his albums, and have been studying songs like Desert Rose after learning Troy’s methods on what Eric is doing, and really finding out they’re not really accurate at all. Basically every fast passage in D.R I’m having to rework to where I can switch strings on a upstroke. I think a lot of times in the book they say he’s doing legato when in fact he’s picking every note

thanks so much for your input guys.

i thought maybe my technique was off and the tab books were right. but now i see i’m not the only one who sees they are wrong.

take a look at the selected bar and tell me what you think: does eric play it as in the tab book or does he play it like this:

cant wait to to see your answers.

thanks.

I found all the tab books for YJM need changes too, ignore the pick stroke suggestions too, Troy’s Method definitely has had a huge impact on getting it right.

I’ve seen EJ up close…no pun intended 20 times or more. He never plays certain passages the same, same goes for chords. If it sounds right to you, good deal. He’s not a static person as far as his style.

peace
