Frank Zappa’s picking.
This is the only video I have found that has a really good look at Zappa’s picking hand.
It looks like a lot of finger movement and left hand pull-offs for the fast stuff. I don’t think Frank was a “pick-every-note” kind of player. It doesn’t sound like that to my ears. IMO/your mileage may vary etc.

This looks like alternate picking to me, and it appears as though he changes his plectrum grip to prepare for the quicker notes.
