Gambale is also a USX

Hi everyone,
great job on the Gambale series, Troy, I love it!
I’d like to point out, but I’m sure that you already know that and maybe will tell us in the next episodes (if so, sorry for the spoiler!), that Frank is also a USX player when he decides to:

An all-round master!

Holy sh*t I love this so much. It’s a 90s aerobics video in guitar form obv.

Yes, we talk about that in first video and we’ll come back to it again in the last one. However I will say that Frank almost never seems to use this motion in actual playing. In the hour-plus interview, I only found one very brief example, so that’s the one we used.

@tommo found a good example in another instructional similar to the “Volcano Pattern” we looked at years ago. So clearly it’s in there somewhere. But in live playing, the “one-way economy” combinations seem to happen mostly in UWPS mode: UUD, UUUD, UUUUD, etc.

Totally!

yeah, I’ve been loving the Gambale stuff! It’s good to know that pick-slanting IS part of his sweep technique when there’s so much stuff on youtube advising against doing so.

I need those pants.

Gambale has always advocated for “leaning” with the pick in the direction of the sweep using rest strokes - he was the first guy to really break this down in instructional vids. Check out Monster Licks.

He didn’t use the term “pickslanting”, but it’s the same concept.

That Chop Builders video…haha!

I had this back in the day. That should have been a huge red flag that I was doing stuff completely wrong. I didn’t know it back then, but I was a rigid upwards pickslanter (DSX or even trapped in both directions at times). I couldn’t hang with Frank even at this moderate speed of 16ths at 120bpm. I could get through like 30 seconds and my hand would start cramping up from the string hopping I was doing haha. I just couldn’t figure out how he and his ‘class’ in this video had such stamina lol! It was demoralizing, because I thought I was a pretty decent player back then. I could rip out some descending Yngwie licks and stuff in that vein. Those were short bursts of fast notes though (and thinking back I probably had a little economy picking to make sure I was on the correct side of the strings at whatever point I needed to keep my upwards leaning pick going).

This clip’s a piece of cake with UXS, (or even DSX, so long as you start on an upstroke). Guitar is so much more fun when you know the rules and aren’t fighting with yourself  The fact that Frank and all the other amazing players on here just did all this stuff intuitively is amazing. Thanks again @Troy and team for cracking that code. This stuff is attainable now!

oh boy, that chop builder video is pure gold

Gambale…
I have watched CtC videos on him recently.
He sweeps up. He sweeps down. He has no problems with alternate picking in both ways (USX or DSX). And like that’s not enough he even uses crosspicking.
And being musical as hell too.
