Guthrie Trapp Hybrid picking and fingerings notation Country Solo

Hey everyone !! ;D I am really excited about this one, would appreciate a lot if u take a look Some country goodiness and a great hybrid picking opportunity ;D

Cracking the code helped me a lot to progress my technique and im always back from time to time. I compare it to basketball, always great to focus on the fundamentals.

Right now im experimenting with holding the pick a littler higher in the finger ( as in a more closed fist) I tried before and failed to feel comfortable but yesterday I had a lil spark of luck and I think I am figuring it out.

How do you keep the pick ? more on the middle of the index or closer to the end of it ?

Closer to the second pic for me. But that choice is likely best suited to the picking style, anchoring/setup that I use (forearm/wrist usx).

When I was practicing two way economy picking though, I was holding the pic closer to the first pic. I never got particularly good at that picking style though so can’t say if my grip choice was right for the setup or not.

I played me whole life like second, tho last few years without the fingers hanging out, now im trying something like the first one. To be honest seems to sound better/easier to be accurate. I will keep trying it and also learn from it to implement in the second one, see what i learn from it ;D

My grip is like the second, but my fingers are in or out depending on the situation. I’m not 100% certain of when the change happens. Obviously hybrid picking requires a bit of finger extension, so that’s one.

The real question to answer is which one is more relaxed and accurate for the situation. At least for me, this is a ‘feel’ thing and not something I think a lot about until after (if ever). I think it has to do with needing a reference point for my brain to know where the strings are. AKA, proprioception - the sense that lets us perceive the location, movement, and action of parts of the body.

If the only contact point is my forearm way back at the body of the guitar, that’s a big lever and it’s less stable by default. Due to that distance from contact, your brain has a much rougher estimate of where the strings are in relation to your hand. Accuracy and stability go down.

Now, lay one or more fingers on the guitar (a’la Steve Morse at times) and boom. The finger is barely touching…but my stability and accuracy shoot way up.

Just my two cents.

I sometimes use the fingers a bit open but if i play on the lower strings its just cramped, maybe with bigger hands works better ;D
