Hal Galper - thoughts on double-time playing

I’m not sure everything is this video is applicable to guitar but there are some wonderful insights here, especially concerning time feel and minimizing emotion and tension for approaching double-time situations. I would love to hear your thoughts, everyone.

I really think that setting the metronome half time helps a lot, although at first it feels kind of weird. There are some people that like to set up the metronome only to the 3rd beat (I haven’t tried it yet but it might be interesting)

‘‘Don’t let this thing fool you… this is not real’’ haha that hit me hard

Yeah. I have heard it set to 1 & 3, 2 & 4, and each individual beat (beat 1 only, beat 2 only, etc). I don’t know that one of these is better than another but i think its worth trying them all. Possibly even setting it one way and thinking another.

Really interesting.
I totally agree with that sound/metronom stuff, that’s cool.
I’m not sure about that be able to play without emotion, really have to think about that.
I understand the intention and it seems logical, on the other hand if you take the player as part of the instrument it becomes tricky.
I like that - it will make me think thats good, regardless of agree or disagree.

Thanks for sharing this.
