@tommo Without thinking about it: what do you naturally do when playing six-note patterns?

Currently I have the laziest index finger in the West, especially when playing sixes

I dont seem to have much choice . When my pinky goes down my index finger jumps up. If I force my index finger to stay down I can feel some tension. I thought this was how it was for everyone.

I can see that @Troy doesn’t lift the index here:

I do a little. You just can’t see it. It sort of pulses but doesn’t come entirely off the string. This came up in another tread on this and I mentioned it there.

I’m not aware of this but if I try to keep the index finger down all the time with even pressure, the same way I would when actually playing anote, that feels effortful.
