Has Troy ever tried to get Paul Gilbert/Jeff Loomis in the Masters of Mechanics studio?

I’m a DSX player and most of the Masters of Mechanics interviews are USX players.

I’ve always believed one day we’ll get a Paul Gilbert or Jeff Loomis MoM since the very beginnings of CoC. A decade later and it doesn’t seem like it’s happening - Paul especially is only getting older and who knows if his mechanics will even be what they were back in the early 2000s. Is there a reason for this? Do they refuse to have their technique dissected? Have they been offered the opportunity?

Paul seems to be extremely prolific with this sort of thing and recently did a long interview with Rick Beato so I’m not sure what the issue could be.

Troy doesn’t owe us anything specific here but I’m mainly just curious what the barriers to having these two guys in the studio are, and how we can help if there is an issue. It would be absolutely amazing to see a surgical dissection of Paul’s technique so we can FINALLY answer some of these questions that have been around since the 1980s (e.g. does he always swipe on the “Gilbert lick”, does he DBX it etc.)

For what is worth, Andy Wood is one of the top DSX players out there.

I was just having a quick look and there seems to be way more DSX player interviews?

I’ve seen Troy asked this on numerous occasions for all of the high profile shredders, in almost all cases it seems Troy has reached out and is met with little interest from the player or no response.

Totally agree. I just think his interview is a bit of a mess when it comes to organization. I’ve tried watching it many times but I think it suffers from him playing the mandolin, acoustic guitar etc. for me to actually take anything away from it. It’s a bit too free form which is in contrast to the newer USX interviews like Brandon Ellis which are way more focused.

Interesting. I’d be genuinely shocked to hear this about Paul, he’s probably the most prolific lesson/interview guy I’ve ever seen. I do know that he can be a bit secretive about the inner workings of his playing - e.g. in his Artist Works lessons whenever he shows something useful he’ll quite often say that’s a secret which I’m giving away etc. (which I can understand earlier in his career but at this stage I don’t see him worrying about it too much).

Someone like Malmsteen is a write off. Loomis seems pretty chill though.

Loomis would indeed be pretty cool to see since he’s a bit of a Reverse-Yngwie.

I’ve interacted with PG a few times and can tell he’s selfless as can be when it comes to sharing guitar knowledge. Hell, I’d be shocked if he’s kept anything to himself as he has basically dissected his own playing in front of everybody on Youtube and instructional videos.

Also, he complimented my musical ear and I can still feel the butterflies in my tummy. :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

How do you mean? I am interested in this claim (<- bs sentence I had to add to meet the 20char limit.)

@cardidanger Jeff is also doing some economy stuff but since he’s DSX I think he’s mostly doing descending economy style opposed to Yngwie’s USX ascending economy and for the classic Yngwie Sixes-Pattern thingy he’s starting on an upstroke instead of a downstroke. There were some threads and posts regarding this around here:
